Running (Turtle Style)

When I first decided that I wanted to start running, I knew that there was no way I could just up and run 3 miles. I couldn't even do 3 minutes.

So I started researching programs on how to start running, and came across Couch 2 5K. The program is designed for people who have never run before, and gradually adds time to running intervals while decreasing time from walking intervals, until you are running for 30 minutes straight. (I personally think that the title is a little bit misleading, because I still can not finish a 5K in 30 minutes, and I've been running for about 4 months now.) But regardless, the program totally works!

It is super encouraging to see how you can run longer each week, especially when you don't think that you can. I was always so full of pride at the end of my workout, knowing that I pushed my body to do something it had never done before.

My husband helped me out and downloaded this app to my iPod, so that all I had to do was listen to the prompts to tell me when to run and when to walk. Super helpful, since running is hard enough, let alone looking at my watch every minute to see when to start and stop. After all, it kind of always felt like time to stop.

So if you want to start running, which I never thought I would do, this is the way to start. And take it one day at a time. And repeat as many days as you need to. Pretty soon you'll be running for 30 minutes straight! And maybe you'll be running a 5K in that time. Leaving me in your dust...

I totally prefer to run outside. The treadmill is like torture for me. You're pretty brave to sign up for a triathlon!!

Kendra - Very cute blog you started. Good idea to keep you motivated and accountable if people are reading about it. :) I've been trying to start a blog for 6 months now and here you have 2...I'm impressed. See you soon.

I've heard so many good things about the couch 2 5k...I asked a friend about it and never got any info from her. Is it something you have to pay for? Cause I'm totally trying to "train" for a 5k, but at this point, it feels hopeless. I guess i can google and find out what I need huh? LOL I haven't ever met you, but I'm proud of you. We all have to start somewhere. :)

C25K are great plans for new runners! I've ran several 5K's and officially started running in Jan. At first, it took everything I had to run 30 seconds. I can now run 6 miles, and honestly, think I could do 8 on a good day. I'm still not fast, just steady and my 5K time is around 32-34 minutes.

I too love the success I feel after a good run! I would someday like to run a half marathon :) After my Tahoe Triathlon is complete of course.

@ Jocelyn-- Couch 2 5K is a free program. I've actually linked to it in the post. There are free podcasts that you can download, I think that the app I have downloaded on my iPod was only $2.99. Good luck, and you can do it!!

If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. =)
