Seriously?

(Kay. Two posts in one day. I couldn't contain myself.)

I usually try to keep my opinion to myself on things that can seem kind of controversial. I prefer to not get  in to arguments, because honestly, I just don't feel like fighting.

But today I was totally enraged by something that I read, and I had to share it with you to hear your opinions.

I read this article over at Marie-Claire today, and was left completely speechless.

I, personally, have never watched the show, so I can't say whether or not it is a good show. But why is it that just because the characters are fat they are not allowed to do what every one else is doing on TV these days? Apparently, they are not allowed to even kiss in public, because...

"I'd be grossed out if I had to watch two characters with rolls and rolls of fat kissing each other ... because I'd be grossed out if I had to watch them doing anything."

Now, to be fair, I'm a total prude, so I'm uncomfortable watching anyone kiss in public. But at least I'm not biased against people kissing just because they're fat.

You know that if she would have written something this derogatory about a black person, or an asian person, or anybody else for that matter she would have at least been fired from her job, if not shot on the streets. And then her contrived apology is supposed to make it all just go away! How does one get by in life being so extremely hateful?

The author of this article should be fired from her job, and I will never buy a Marie Claire magazine again. Go read the article. Let me know what you think. I'm so mad I can't even get my words out right.

Was the addendum on there or is that new?

The author added the following: "UPDATE: I would really like to apologize for the insensitive things I've said in this post. Believe it or not, I never wanted anyone to feel bullied or ashamed after reading this, and I sorely regret that it upset people so much. A lot of what I said was unnecessary. It wasn't productive, either.

I know a lot of people truly struggle to lose weight — for medical and psychological reasons — and that many people have an incredibly difficult time getting to a healthy size. I feel for those people and I'm truly sorry I added to the unhappiness and pain they feel with my post.

I would like to reiterate that I think it's great to have people of all shapes and healthy sizes represented in magazines (as, it bears mentioning here, they are in Marie Claire) and on TV shows — and that in my post, I was talking about a TV show that features people who are not simply a little overweight, but appear to be morbidly obese. (Morbid obesity is defined as 100 percent more than their ideal weight.) And for whatever it's worth, I feel just as uncomfortable when I see an anorexic person as I do when I see someone who is morbidly obese, because I assume people suffering from eating disorders on either end of the spectrum are doing damage to their bodies, and that they are unhappy. But perhaps I shouldn’t be so quick to judge based on superficial observations.

To that point (and on a more personal level), a few commenters and one of my friends mentioned that my extreme reaction might have grown out of my own body issues, my history as an anorexic, and my life-long obsession with being thin. As I mentioned in the ongoing dialogue we’ve been carrying on in the comments section, I think that's an accurate insight.

People have accused me of being a bully in my post. I never intended to be that — it's actually the very last thing I want to be, as a writer or a person. But I know that I came off that way, and I really cannot apologize enough to the people whom I upset."

Now, for the record, her article offended me, even with the tacked on update.

And, I really like the show "Mike & Molly."

I read the article and I will never buy that magazine again. I love the way she states her true feelings in the article and then tries to back paddle her way out of it with the apology which probably wasn't even wrote by her.

Did you see that she put up an update apologizing. Yea right, more like she was forced to apologize from all the negativity that was received from her stupid post. What a hag.

Holy Moses! That was offensive to say the least. I can't believe an editor let that be published. Yikes! I would have expected a lot more from MC...

UNBELIEVABLE. I am totally sick of MC and all their stupid crud they write. I heard on twitter a couple weeks ago an author writing something again people with weight loss blogs... yeah. And your right, if it were about race, she would be fired.

What she said was very hurtful. She should have thought a bit before hitting "publish." I am glad that she posted an apology of sorts. It sounds as though she is working through some pretty open wounds weight-wise herself (though from the other side). I haven't bought MC magazine ever and don't intend to start right now.
